Pet Emergencies 101: What Every Owner Should Know
Accidents can happen in an instant, and when they do, every second counts. Knowing how to recognize a pet emergency—and what to do next—can save your pet’s life.
Recognizing a True Emergency
Some signs are obvious, but others can be easy to overlook. Contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency hospital immediately if your pet shows any of these symptoms:
- Difficulty breathing or persistent coughing
- Collapse, disorientation, or loss of consciousness
- Seizures or tremors
- Continuous vomiting or diarrhea (especially with blood)
- Bloated or distended abdomen
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- Sudden inability to walk or stand
- Ingestion of toxins (chocolate, xylitol, medications, etc.)
- Trauma (hit by car, bite wounds, or falls)
- Crying out in pain or sudden change in behavior
When in doubt, it’s always better to call your veterinarian. Pets often hide pain, and what seems minor can become serious quickly.
How to Prepare for a Pet Emergency
You never want to think about your pet being in danger—but preparation gives you confidence when it matters most.
Create a pet emergency kit that includes:
- Gauze and adhesive tape
- Digital thermometer
- Tweezers and blunt scissors
- Hydrogen peroxide (only use if instructed by a vet)
- Saline solution
- Muzzle or towel (to prevent bites when your pet is in pain)
- Copies of your pet’s medical records
- Contact numbers for your vet, local emergency clinic, and poison control
Keep this kit accessible at home and when traveling.
What to Do on the Way to the Vet
If your pet is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage. Keep them warm and calm, and minimize movement—especially if you suspect broken bones.
If your pet has ingested something toxic, bring the packaging or a sample to the hospital. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to.
After the Emergency
Once your pet is stable, your veterinarian may recommend follow-up care such as bloodwork, X-rays, or medication. It’s important to monitor your pet closely and follow all discharge instructions to prevent complications.
