Xylitol Poisoning in Dogs: The Hidden Toxic Sweetener in Candies

Sedated Dog On An Exploration Table

Many sugar-free products seem harmless—but for dogs, they can be deadly. The culprit is xylitol, a common sugar substitute found in candies, gum, baked goods, and even some peanut butters.

Why Xylitol Is Dangerous

In humans, xylitol is safe. But in dogs, it triggers a rapid release of insulin, leading to dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) within minutes to hours of ingestion.

Even small amounts can cause severe reactions—and larger doses may result in liver failure.

Common Sources of Xylitol

  • Sugar-free gum or mints
  • Sugar-free candy and chocolate
  • Protein bars and diet foods
  • Baked goods labeled “sugar-free”
  • Some peanut butters
  • Mouthwash, toothpaste, and medications

Always check ingredient labels carefully—especially on products labeled sugar-free or low-carb.

 Symptoms of Xylitol Poisoning

Signs can appear quickly, often within 10–60 minutes:

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness or staggering
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Collapse
  • Jaundice (in severe cases involving the liver)

What to Do If You Suspect Poisoning

This is a medical emergency. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Early treatment—such as IV fluids, glucose supplementation, and hospitalization—dramatically improves survival rates.

 Protecting Your Dog

The best prevention is awareness. Keep all sugar-free foods and dental products out of reach, and use peanut butters without xylitol when giving treats or medications. If you think your dog may have eaten something toxic, call Partners Animal Hospital Greenville or your nearest emergency vet immediately. Quick care can save your dog’s life.
