Kennel Cough: How to Protect Your Dog
If your dog suddenly develops a persistent, hacking cough that sounds like something stuck in their throat, they may have kennel cough—a contagious respiratory infection that spreads quickly among dogs. While it’s usually mild, kennel cough can make your pet uncomfortable and, in some cases, lead to more serious illness.
What Is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough, or canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses—most commonly Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus.
It spreads through the air and on contaminated surfaces, so dogs can pick it up anywhere they interact closely with others: boarding facilities, dog parks, groomers, daycare, or even a quick trip to the vet.
Common Symptoms
- A dry, honking cough (often worse at night or after activity)
- Retching or gagging
- Sneezing or nasal discharge
- Mild fever
- Decreased appetite or lethargy (in more serious cases)
Most healthy dogs recover within 1–3 weeks, but puppies, seniors, and dogs with underlying conditions may experience more severe symptoms.
Prevention Is Key
The best defense against kennel cough is vaccination. The Bordetella vaccine—often combined with parainfluenza and adenovirus protection—can significantly reduce your dog’s risk.
Other preventive steps include:
- Avoiding shared water bowls and toys in public spaces
- Choosing boarding facilities that require proof of vaccination
- Keeping your dog home if they’re coughing or unwell
Helping Your Dog Recover
If your dog develops a cough, isolate them from other pets and contact your veterinarian. Mild cases often resolve with rest and supportive care, but severe or prolonged coughing may require medication.
